Building strong and ethical therapeutic relationships with racially marginalized clients: Navigating race based trauma, broaching race and ethnicity, and power and privilege in the therapeutic relationship.

 

This is an introductory workshop that will highlight the clinical importance of sensitivity to the potentially traumatic nature of racial marginalization for clients. The presenter will utilize lecture, case study, and small and large group discussion to facilitate learning.

 Upon completion, participants will be able to:

·      Define race-based trauma

·      Discuss ways race based trauma can impact clients lives and be integrated into case conceptualization

·      Integrate counseling skills relevant to building culturally sensitive therapeutic relationships with racially marginalized clients

·      Reflect on their own racial identity development and how it impacts their cultural humility
